Introducing Turkey…
Turkey is not just a holiday destination, it is the land where East meets West and a country that deserves to be experienced and explored.
For history buffs there really is nowhere quite like Turkey. Almost every village and town tells a tale - the landscape is scattered with battlegrounds, Roman and Lycian ruins, tombs and palaces of great ancient civilisations that can literally be stumbled upon. Turkey is where Achilles fought with the Trojans in Homers Iliad, where Alexander the Great cut the Gordion Knot, and the place where Ottoman battles were fought that helped shape the world as we know it. Overrun, rebuilt, conquered and lost by many, Turkey as we now know it now was formed in 1923 by the national hero Mustafa Kemal, later given the name ‘Ataturk’ or ‘Father of Turks’. His effective and rather authoritarian leadership brought about needed and wide-ranging social, political and legal reforms that helped shape the country into the force it is today. The strong Turkish spirit and many recent changes to political and economic policies have now led them to bid for EU membership. Now well into process, this may take time but may well be possible if Turkey continues to preform as it has recently, it is rapidly becoming one of the fastest growing economies and now tipped as one of the best places to invest in the world!
Geographically and officially, Turkey lies within two continents – Asia and Europe. The smaller part (Thrace) lies in Europe and the majority of the region known as Anatolia is part of Asia.
